Welcome to Week 5, Term 3

Morena parents and caregivers on this lovely Sunday morning. The first hints of Spring are in the air with blossoms on trees, longer days, and a slight increase in temperature. We trust everyone is fine and that the big burst of viruses we have had spreading through classes over the first half of the term is nearly at its end. A reminder to keep your child at home if they are sick to halt the spread.

Tough Guy and Gal Challenge

On Wednesday a number of children are involved in Tough Guy and Gal Challenge. If your child has registered for this event please make sure you are aware of the information about the day.

Chess Team Cake Stall

A Chess team is traveling to Tauranga on Friday with Mr. G and the Chess Club has organised a cake stall on Thursday at Morning Interval to raise funds for the team.

Junior School Cross Country

On Friday, after interval, Kakano has scheduled the Junior Cross Country, which includes Year 3 classes. Fingers crossed the weather is fine for this event.

Hygiene and Viruses

A reminder that we all need to keep good hygiene measures at the forefront for our children. Please remind children to sanitise as they arrive at school, sanitise as they arrive in learning spaces after interval and lunch and sanitise when arriving back to classrooms from PE etc. We should also be encouraging them to cough into their elbows.

Operation Christmas Child Appeal

RE Books

RE books were sent home with children a while ago with a whanau page to be completed by parents and caregivers. Thank you to those who have completed this, there were some lovely positive comments made in the books.  We are still waiting for a few books to be returned. Could these books be returned to school ASAP please?

Weekly Notices, Term 3 Week 4

 Kia ora, 

Welcome to Week 4. What a beautiful day we've had. The All Blacks won, and it was convincingly too. Whew! The sun’s shining and in two weeks we will be into Spring.

Friday was a lovely celebration of Mary MacKillop. We had a wonderful mass where some very brave tamariki spoke in front of the church. The children enjoyed the outdoor physical activities and the fun indoor crafts. Thank you very much to Mrs Trask for taking these awesome photos of our mass.

Weekly Notices, Term 3 Week 3

Kia Orana

Welcome to week 3. It was lovely to have a sunny week last week where we could get outside to play and practice for cross-country. Thank you to parents for attending the 3-Way Conferences. This time spent discussing reports, progress and goals is valuable and all of our children were proud of their achievements.

Tomorrow is the  Feast Day of Mary MacKillop and we will be celebrating this on Friday with a Mass at 9:00 led by Kahikatea. This will be followed by fun activities.

Next Sunday, the parish has a Māori Miha (Māori Mass) at 10.00 am followed by a procession carrying the Statue of Mother Mary around the Church and our school. All students from the schools are invited to join the procession with their parents at 11.00 am in front of St Mary’s Church.

Weekly Notices - Term 3, Week 2

Bonjour and welcome to Week 2. I think everyone is sick of the constant rain but the children seem to be coping with it well and fortunately, many morning tea and lunch breaks have been free of rain. The long-term forecast is for a dry and warm Spring so here's hoping. Please ensure tamariki are in the correct named Winter uniform. Some children do not have working headphones at the moment. We do have some spares in class but could parents and caregivers please ask children if they need a new pair of headphones purchased?  It is Cook Island Language Week this week.

School production

We had our first week practising for our school production and it looks like it is going very well. Mrs. Trask is doing a fantastic job as director and is organising the children beautifully.

Bomb Threats

Last week we saw a number of schools around New Zealand targeted by bomb threats. Please be aware that we are taking all possible measures to ensure staff and children know what to do if St Mary's is targeted. It seems that the threats are coming from overseas and are not genuine. It is of course important that all such threats are taken seriously.

Dance Back to Class Day

Friday is dance back to class day. Mr. Macmillan will have some pizza vouchers to give out to the most enthusiastic dancers. One pizza per prizewinner and they can share their pizza with a friend.

Reading Log Draw

Friday will also be the Holiday reading draw so can parents and children ensure that reading logs are back by Thursday at the latest.

Parent-Teacher-Student Conferences

Parent-Teacher-Student 3-way conferences are scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday. If you have not done so already please make a booking using the instructions given below. If you need more time than the 10 minutes allocated please arrange with me for another meeting, at a later date. Teachers have a schedule to follow and in order for it to be fair for everybody, we need to adhere to this schedule.

Friday Geometry

 Today we began exploring geometry, specifically 2D and 3D shapes. Mr Bach explained that 3D stands for 3 dimensions (up/down, forward/backwards and left/right) and 2D has only 2 dimensions. The children practiced naming different shapes in their groups and discussed the differences between each shape. Next week we will begin exploring the properties of these shapes and learning about how they are present in our everyday lives.

 Kia ora parents and whanau, we hope you had wonderful holidays and your tamariki are feeling rested and ready for school again. We have an exciting term ahead, especially with the production being performed at the end.

Monday - First day back at school. Please ensure tamariki come in the correct named uniform. Some students took a notice home about getting some new stationary books. Please make sure they have these as well.

Weekly Notices, Term 2, Week 10

Good morning and welcome to week 10, the last week of term.  It has been a busy term with many activities and lots of progress made with learning.  

Thank you to those who attended the Matariki dinner on Thursday night.  It is an event we look forward to and again, it was a big success.  Next year will be our 10th time putting this on.  

We have enjoyed watching the children learning through play and would like to ask for help in collecting the following items if you have them lying around not being used.                        Boxes and recycling

We all have recycling and the children love to use these materials in their artwork.  We always have the need for these materials.

What is useful

* Cereal Boxes

* Egg cartons

* Clean yoghurt containers 

* Bottle tops. Milk, beer etc

* Old newspaper, flyers, magazines etc

* Fabric pieces

* Wool-off cuts

* Untreated wood off cuts
